Everyone was running outside. I saw the shifting hues coming in through the windows. When I walked out of the door it was as though my memory started and it was the first thing I'd ever seen. The skies were dark with green and orange, but as we watched, patches of multicolor light formed and burst through the turbulent clouds revealing what lied beyond: a swirl of kaleidoscopic imagery telescoped into an unimaginable but undeniable beyond. Organic geometric shapes and cosmic bodies worked to make up the edges of this new horizon we could now all see. And through the hole, something that touched my core with wonder - even though I couldn't make it out, some part of me knew exactly what it was. My memory of it is more emotion than image but when I try to think about what I saw it reminds me of a video that's too zoomed in and moving too fast. It was familiar. Eventually my attention returned to what remained of the sky I knew, which was now a light shade of blue with tufts of cottony vapor slowly spinning upwards into the stellar horizon. I fumbled for my camera as my brain attempted to catch up to the spectacle and shot a few seconds of the event before the clouds obscured the sight and dissipated to reveal a perfectly normal sunset on a partially cloudy day. I was filled with an excitement I've never felt before. It would have made sense to feel fear or terror, but there was none of that. I thought I was dreaming - I checked the internet to see if anyone else was able to see it. There I found a non-stop stream of pictures and videos from around the world of different but equally remarkable happenings in the sky; all captured on video. Everyone who had witnessed it was similarly and equally inexplicably overjoyed, though there were those who claimed they didn't see anything. It seems now in retrospect that on that first day, we already knew what we had to do.
